Animation Research (Annotated Examples)

This post will show all my examples of good practice I have found during my research for all my animations.

Lil' Guardian Pyro
Though I have featured this video, I am mainly referring to the game Team Fortress 2 and the software used to create videos such as these, Source FilmMaker. The software in particular allows you to view character models in a 3D space and view their walk/run cycles and many other animations.

This animation specifically shows a great example of walk cycles based on a character, in this case, miniature characters.

Wreck-It Ralph
Disney's 3D animated move "Wreck-It Ralph" is a great example of different characters walk cycles, with the diversity of characters of different sizes, personalities and even species.

Being a large budget movie, the animation quality is obviously top notch.

Delta Heavy - Get By (Music Video)
This music video is a great example of stop motion. The lower frame rate provides a creepy feel to the whole animation, even before the knives and tools come out. It also shows great use of sync the objects movement to the music by creating waveforms with objects such as Scrabble pieces.

Egoraptor
The popular animator Egoraptor shows a good example of entertaining frame-by-frame animations. In particular his work is probably one of the best examples of exaggeration in animation.

Kinetic Typography - Zombieland Rules
This kinetic typography video shows great use of combining kinetic type with motion graphics, the video often use both in a way where one compliments the other.

Though I do find some of the camera movement and sound synchronisation a little poor, the overall style and animation is very well done.

What's He Building In There - Kinetic Typography

This is a great example of Kinetic Typography I found during my research for the speech animation. The text moves around in a 3D space and is used to replace and act like objects, such as doors.

I feel the strongest points are at 0:07 - 0:011 and 0:25-0:29
At these points I was impressed by the innovative use of type as objects.

The overall style and smoothness of animation make this a very enjoyable video to watch.

Who's Afraid of Mister Greedy
One of the first animations I stumbled across upon researching for speech animation. Although it resembles a style not far from a Disney production, the whole animation feels very dark, the world itself is very twisted.

The style is similar to a cartoon but the environments are something I could transfer into my own animation work.

Limbo
Although this is a video game, the animation and art style are both incredible. The world is shrouded in mystery due to the lack of colour or detail. All the animation flows smoothly and is hard to believe that this is a game and not a predefined animation.

This was a heavy inspiration in the style of my speech animation.

The Trenches
Inspired by the move Suckerpunch. The animation style is extremely grungy and dark, almost as if watching a graphic novel coming to life. This style was one I considered before ultimately deciding to produce the Limboesque style in my animation.

La Queue de la Souris
Extremely well animated in a silhouette style. Much like Limbo, the lack of detail seems to work in its favour. The animation and style blend so well together that not a single detail looks out of place.
